Program Description:

Non-GC Study Abroad Programs
IndiaIf you have not been able to find a Georgia College study abroad program that fits your needs, you may consider participating in a  program that is not affiliated with GC. This can include programs offered by other U.S. universities or study abroad companies.  Students may also directly enroll in a college or university abroad.

The responsibility for researching non-GC programs and courses lies with the student. GC study abroad advisers may be able to give some g
uidance, but you must research and determine the program you would like to attend.

You will also need to meet with your GC Academic Advisor, your department chair (and perhaps others) to determine if the courses will satisfy your degree requirements, and how the classes and credits will transfer to GC.

Registration/Application Process

  1. Email the study abroad office at the email listed below to set up an appointment.
    • You must include in this email a link to the program that interests you.
  2. Begin the GC online registration.
    • In order for your credits to transfer to Georgia College, you must complete the internal GC application.
    • After you have read this entire page here, select "Apply Now" at the bottom of this screen and follow the prompts for a GC Login.
    • You will have at least two applications - one to the program itself and one for GC.
    • The GC registration should be submitted by October 1 for Spring semester programs, by March 1 for Summer or Fall programs, or in sufficient time to meet the specific program application deadlines.
      • The GC online application has a required application fee, which can be paid via your GC online application once you are certain you will apply to the program.
  3. Meet with a GC study abroad advisor. Bring or submit program information that includes responses to the following:
Beautiful View in China> Who issues the transcript?

> What does the program cost include and not include? Look for items such as tuition, textbooks, course supplies, accommodations, airfare, meals, ground transportation, excursions, field trips, entry fees, etc.

> Is study abroad health insurance included in the cost of the program? GC students on non-GC programs are encouraged to have a study abroad insurance policy which provides emergency evacuation & repatriation of remains up to $50,000.  If international health insurance is not included in the program, you are encouraged to enroll in the CISI plan negotiated by the University System of Georgia for education abroad participants. More information on the CISI insurance plan is available below and as you complete the GC online application.

  • The appropriate Georgia College course approval form, completed and signed by your GC academic advisors, department chairs, and others as indicated.
    • Complete the GC Transient Permission Form if a U.S. college or university issues the transcript. Most students who select a non-GC program will need this form and will need to follow the GC Registrar's office Transient student process.
    • Complete the GC Study Abroad Course Approval Form if an international (a non-U.S.) institution will issue the transcript.
  • Any forms the host organization needs signed by the GC Study Abroad advisor
  • Any additional information required by Georgia College

  • It is the student's responsibility to secure or renew their passport and any other required travel documents in a timely manner.
  • If you do not yet have a passport, you should apply immediately.

After Acceptance
Study Abroad Students are required to:

  • Ensure with the host program director prior to departure that transcripts will be released to Georgia College
    • Transcripts issued from U.S. institutions should be mailed to the GC Registrar’s Office, CBX 69, Milledgeville, GA 31061.
    • International transcripts should be mailed to the GC International Education Center, CBX 49, Milledgeville, GA 31061.
Insurance: It is recommended that students get study abroad health insurance if the program does not provide it.  Students are encouraged to enroll in the CISI plan negotiated by the University System of Georgia for study abroad participants.  To self-enroll in CISI Insurance, please visit: https://www.mycisi.com/CISIPortalWeb/default.aspx.  You will need the following Sponsor Code in order to complete enrollment: USGA-GACSU

Financial Aid and Scholarships
Students going on Non-GC programs may apply for the GC Study Abroad Scholarship only if the program is for academic credit.
  • You may apply online after submitting both the GC application and the non-GC program application.
  • Students can also apply for financial aid to assist while studying abroad, but financial aid is usually very limited or not available for Non-GC programs. Students should contact the GC Financial Aid Office for more information.  More info can also be found on our Scholarships and Funding page.

 Prior to and Upon Arrival

  • Students are responsible for program fees, housing deposits, travel document expenses (i.e. passport, visa), books, airfare, transportation, and any other travel or living costs while abroad that are not included in the non-GC program fee.
  • Should the student withdraw at any point, the student is subject to the provider’s withdrawal policy. Some or all program fees may be withheld by the provider subject to negotiations with the provider.

NOTE: Grades and credits are assigned when final transcripts are sent by your program to GC's International Education Center.

  • Often, it is the responsibility of the student to request that transcripts be sent to GC-International, so be sure to ask your non-GC program staff abroad.
  • Kindly be advised that it is not unusual for transcripts to arrive many weeks after the conclusion of programs abroad.
  • For international transcripts, GC-International evaluates the credentials, compares transcripts with the filed list of courses approved, and then submits the paperwork to the GC Registrar’s Office for posting.
    • Be sure that your course approvals are kept current.  If you take courses abroad that are not on your signed approval form, you must obtain new approvals and then resubmit the form to GC-International.
