Italian Art, Cities, and Culture Experience:

“Hotheads, Divinities, Murderers, and Technical Wizards:
Conversations about Four Italian Master Artists plus Cities and Culture in Italy.”
Dr. Callaghan lead a Border Free GC experience learning more about Italian art and culture during winter break 2020.
When: Tuesday and Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.  December 1 through 22, 2020.
Where: Zoom.
Dr. James Callaghan presented on a wide-ranging series of conversations about four of the greatest masters of Italian Renaissance and Baroque painting - Michelangelo, Raphael, Caravaggio, and Titian - plus the cities and regions that they lived and worked in.  Leveraging virtual technologies you will visit Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and the famous “Raphael Rooms” of Vatican City, follow the trail of spectacular – and controversial - paintings that Caravaggio left throughout the south of Italy while on-the-run from authorities, and marvel at the technical and stylistic innovations produced across the very long career of the Venetian master, Titian.  Along the way, you will discover how painters learned their craft and how paintings and frescoes (murals) were created, plus details of the genuinely fascinating lives of these four exceptional artists.  No previous knowledge of art history is required.  Espresso or cappuccino is optional but will further add to your enjoyment.

10 Plants that Changed the World

Program Description: Human existence is impossible without plant resources.  Plants provide clothing, food, fuel, medicine, shelter and a vast array of raw materials ranging from rubber to wood.  In this course we will explore ten plants that are global resources which have had a great economic and historical impact.  An independent course project, arranged with the instructor, will require students to demonstrate the ability to describe the complex relationships among culture, human needs, and plants and to assess options for conserving and managing plant resources.
Highlights: Case studies of the Bahamas and Rwanda will provide a means to compare and contrast the uses of plants to meet human needs.  We will look at plant usage by African diaspora in the Bahamas and Southern United States.  Our goal is to have Bahamians, Rwandans, and Georgians provide their own narrative and share their deep knowledge of plants.  There will also be surprise visits during Zoom meetings of individuals from Washington State, Tempe Arizona, or botanical gardens who simply want to join the class and our conversations.
Course Delivery Mode:
50% of course content will be delivered asynchronously with 1 hour synchronous discussions 1 - 2 times per week.
Cross-cultural learning experiences count for 25% of the content and will be hosted in 2 - 3 live synchronous sessions in the mornings.
Students will choose either a project or local excursions for the remaining 25%.
Selection Process Students are accepted on a first come first serve basis as long as they meet the pre-requisite requirements.
