GC Tanzania: Disability & Culture
July 8-22, 2022

 

Explore the geography and culture of one of Africa’s most stable and culturally diverse nations through the lens of disability. Observe and volunteer at local schools and community centers serving individuals with disabilities. Experience life with the Maasai as you learn about their cultural understanding of disabilities. Indulge in the opportunity to learn in a hands-on setting and satisfy that itch for adventure through Maasai bush walks and safari!

Students take ONE of the following courses: 

  • GC2Y: Disability & Culture in Tanzania (4 credit hours)
  • EDUC 2120: Exploring Socio-Cultural Perspectives in Educational Contexts (3 credit hours)
  • EDEX 4950: Special Topics in Special Education (Tanzania) (3 credit hours)

About the Professor - Dr. Nicole M. DeClouette:

Dr. Nicole M. DeClouette is an Associate Professor of Special Education at Georgia College & State University. Dr. DeClouette received her Ph.D. in Special Education from Syracuse University after completing her dissertation on whole-school inclusive reform. She leads a study abroad program to Tanzania, which is in East Africa.  

Dr. DeClouette’s research includes cultural constructions of disability and international inclusive education. She serves as President-Elect for the Council for Exceptional Children’s (CEC) Division of International Special Education and Services (DISES). Dr. DeClouette values her community-based partnership with Baldwin County’s Life Enrichment Center (LEC), a program that serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
