Neuschwanstein_USGGFrom Neuschwanstein (the model for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle), Martin Luther’s home, Dachau Concentration Camp to German manufacturing and brewery, we will investigate Germany on a two-week multi-city program. This program will take a comparative institutional approach to understanding German culture and society allowing the course material to appeal to a wide range of students from engineering, business, history, and the social sciences.  Utilizing the sociological perspective, we will trace how religion, race, and nationalism has shaped Germany’s past and present. While in Berlin we will participate in a scavenger hunt tracing the remains of the Berlin Wall learning about life in a divided city as well as getting a glimpse of modern Berlin by visiting Parliament, or the Bundestag, and seeing the youthful, artistic, and cosmopolitan aspects of the city.  Enjoy learning about amazing medieval and modern architecture, local cuisine, museums, cathedrals, and castles as you travel by train or bus to the Bavarian region to see the charm of Nuremburg then it’s on to exploring Munich with a day trip to Salzburg, Austria, the birth place of Mozart, and the resort town of Berchtesgaden, home to Hitler’s retreat and a visit to the bunker system still open to the public. As learning sociologists, we will investigate a new land using our “sociological imagination” to understand social forces and social phenomena which are normally difficult to uncover due to their “everyday” nature and become more evident when our place changes.

A variety of upper and lower level classes are offered.
